Straight Drop Awnings are versatile outdoor blinds that do not require guides; instead, the weighted end rail is secured to railings or floor when lowered. Drop awnings make great alfresco blinds for protecting patios, verandahs and covered balconies from the elements. A straight drop awning can be installed with face fit or top fix mounting brackets into most surfaces above an opening. These blinds feature a weighted bottom rail attached to the fabric that sits parallel with the headbox/roller tube. When lowered, the bottom rail is secured via your choice of a range of clip fastenings or locking bolts to a railing or floor surface; then, the crank handle is used to tension the fabric until the blind is taut.

Suitable Areas
Straight drop outdoor blinds are incredibly versatile and can turn any covered outdoor structure into a functional all-weather alfresco living and entertaining area. The material you choose for your drop awnings will determine the level of privacy and protection against the elements your blinds will provide. You may even decide to use particular face materials for different aspects. For example, on a high-rise apartment balcony, you might use acrylic side blinds to provide privacy from neighbouring balconies but a clear PVC main blind to enjoy the city views. Drop awnings can also protect windows that don't open outwards.

Installing alfresco blinds allows you to control when, where and how much direct sunlight you want in your outdoor space. As their name suggests, these outdoor awnings drop straight down, they have no side channels, so if the weighted bottom rail is left unsecured, they will sway in the wind. Amaru offers various options to anchor your blind to suit every application, from webbed strapping to stainless steel saddle brackets.
Standard drop awning installation includes a headbox, which protects the awning and roller mechanism when not in use. Awning headboxes are colour-matched to your home guttering or custom powder-coated to the colour of your choice.
When anchored, drop awnings create a taut vertical surface that does not protrude outward, making them a perfect outdoor blind for windows with limited clearance, such as those close to fences or walkways.

Please Note: If you have chosen one of our motorised awning products, always ensure any electrical connections are isolated and switched off before cleaning.
- Always keep the awning taut when down to avoid pools of water gathering on the fabric. Prolonged water exposure can cause your awning to lose its mould and mildew resistant coating and leave stains or fading.
- Regularly inspect and clean the awning to keep it free of dirt, dust, grime, leaf-litter and bird droppings as these may cause stains and bacterial growth to develop if left unattended.
- Clean your awnings with a sponge, warm water and a mild non-abrasive soap. Always rinse thoroughly to remove any remaining suds. Never use scrubbing brushes or scourers on the fabric. We also recommend hosing down your awnings on hot sunny days to remove dirt and dust. Never use sugar soap, concentrated soaps, harsh detergents, industrial cleaning fluids or bleach as these will strip the fabric of any protective coatings and cause damage and discolouration of your awning.
- Keep insecticides, solvents, fuels and flames away from the awning.
- Occasionally fully extend, then retract the blind to maintain the awning mechanisms and even out the material, especially if you usually keep your blind in one position.
